Naulakha Stable
Naulakha Stable
Dummerston, Vermont
Sleeps 2 (1 studio bedroom) · 1 full bath · 2-night minimum · From $235-$350/night, $1,526-$2,150/week
Completed in 1896 for Rudyard Kipling’s horses, Nip & Tuck and Rod & Rick, the initial restoration of the Naulakha Stable took place in 1995. At this time an incompatible later addition was removed and the building’s ground level was then used for many years to display historical information on Kipling’s time in Vermont.
Thirty years later in 2026, we completed our own “nip and tuck” project, collaborating with local experts on an exciting adaptive reuse that created a new Landmark within the Stable’s loft. As with all Landmark projects, all work followed the highest historic preservation standards, using reclaimed and locally sourced materials throughout to ensure an unforgettable destination that honors the building’s distinct and irreplaceable historic character.
Naulakha Stable sits on the edge of the forest covering Kipling Hill amidst the white pines planted by Kipling himself. Below the house is an open meadow with superb views of the Connecticut River Valley. In the early mornings, visitors may see foxes, deer, or wild turkeys. The shops, restaurants, brew pubs, and arts venues of Brattleboro, Vermont, winner of the 2023 Strong Towns Strongest Town contest, are just 10 minutes away.
Naulakha Stable shares its beautiful grounds with Naulakha (4 bedrooms) and Kipling’s Carriage House (2 bedrooms). Rent them together to house up to 14 or individually to suit your needs.
All of our properties include WiFi. ChargePoint EV charging stations are available right next door at scenic Scott Farm.
Add a Local Treat Basket for family retreats or working vacations at Kipling’s Carriage House! Real maple syrup, local apple pie, and more.
Our Stay & Play Golf Package is a great option for stays May-October, combining your overnight stay with golf at Brattleboro Country Club.

Features
The first floor maintains its historic appearance as a horse stable, offering a charming entrance to your private loft.
The second floor includes an open concept bedroom with a queen-size bed, kitchenette, and seating area, plus a full bath with shower. Reclaimed wood makes the space extra cozy. Views look out over the meadow and valley beyond.
The grounds once accommodated a vast garden and today feature perennials, large shade trees, and a charming lawn area with seating. There is on-site or nearby access to sledding, snowshoeing, hiking, and cross-country ski trails. In the spring, guests can travel through Naulakha’s rhododendron tunnel while the flowers are in full bloom. Note that the clay tennis court will be closed for the 2026 season due to ongoing drainage work at the site.
Half a mile down the road is the 571-acre Scott Farm, a socially responsible business (Certified B Corporation) that is also a property of The Landmark Trust USA. During the fall, visitors can sample 130 varieties of ecologically grown heirloom apples, from Blue Pearmain (one of Thoreau’s favorites) to Esopus Spitzenburg (beloved by Thomas Jefferson). Pick your own apples, enjoy the incredible view and delicious sandwiches at Pippin’s Café, or visit the Farm Market to pick up a pie, a bottle of our own sweet or hard cider, or Scott Farm’s apples and other fine fruit. Located on the farm are stunning stone walls constructed by the expert builders at The Stone Trust, a nonprofit organization whose offices are at Scott Farm and whose mission is to preserve and advance the art and craft of dry stone walling. Scott Farm also has two public Chargepoint EV charging stations right at the farm so you can charge your vehicle at the most scenic station in Vermont.
