About Us
The Landmark Trust USA is a nonprofit organization based in southern Vermont that preserves and restores historic properties through creative and sustainable uses for public enjoyment, education and inspiration.
The Trust’s six beautifully restored properties in Vermont are available year-round for short-term vacation rentals, perfect for groups of two to eight people. Our long-term goal is to expand nationally. The Landmark Trust USA also offers creative place-based educational programming including public tours of our properties, innovative student programs, and thought provoking webinars on important cultural heritage topics.
Our philosophy of sustainable stewardship relies on the income from short-term vacation rentals to preserve and maintain the integrity of each distinctive building. Each stay at a Landmark Trust property supports our nonprofit mission, bringing new life to heritage buildings. This preservation stewardship model is shared by two other international organizations: The Landmark Trust in Great Britain and the Irish Landmark Trust. The Landmark Trust USA will continue to apply this model as we bring on new historic properties. While vacation rentals defray a major portion of operating and maintenance costs, The Landmark Trust USA also relies on generous donations from supporters to help achieve our mission and expand our reach.
The Landmark Trust USA selects properties to restore and maintain based on architectural and historical merit, with current properties dating from c.1802 to 1915. We use traditional skills and methods to restore these properties, such as the craft of dry stone walling.
We furnish the restored properties and provide clean linens and well-equipped kitchens. All of our properties have WiFi access and are a short trip away from nearby ski slopes, hiking trails, snowshoeing trails, art museums, shops, or other attractions.
Our historic buildings are beautiful in the red, gold, and orange colors of fall foliage season. They are just as lovely in the snow, with the rhododendrons and irises blooming in spring, or in the temperate New England summers. Dogs are welcome at The Sugarhouse and Amos Brown House, for travelers looking for a place to stay with their pets.
Five of the Trust’s properties are just down the road from Scott Farm, a historic and working farm where visitors can pick ecologically grown heirloom apples, sample locally made cider and pies, and participate in events such as orchard walks, Heirloom Apple Days, and the annual Harvest Dinner.
The Landmark Trust USA is the parent organization of Scott Farm, our for-profit working farm and a socially responsible Certified B Corporation. With shared leadership, staff, and facilities, we work closely to develop a sustainable agricultural model that respects the character of the land and achieves market viability. Scott Farm offers an opportunity to acquaint people to our working landscape and the history of the farm, which dates back to 1791.
Located on the same property as Scott Farm is The Stone Trust, a nonprofit that exists to preserve and advance the art and craft of dry stone walling through education and outreach.
The Landmark Trust USA is a proud member of Vermont Businesses for Social Responsibility (VBSR).
