The Sugarhouse at Scott Farm is a rustic cabin at the edge of a maple sugarbush, a stand of maple trees that is still used for maple sugaring in the spring. It was built in 1915 to house the boilers that converted raw sap to maple syrup.

Located on the grounds of the 571-acre Scott Farm, The Sugarhouse is a cozy retreat with nearby apple picking, hiking, biking, and skiing in season. The picturesque Scott Farm was a key location for the filming of the Academy Award-winning movie The Cider House Rules, based on the John Irving novel of the same name. The bustling shops, restaurants, brew pubs, and arts venues of Brattleboro, Vermont, winner of the 2023 Strong Towns Strongest Town contest, are just 10 minutes away.

All Landmark Trust USA properties include WiFi. ChargePoint EV charging stations are available right next door at scenic Scott Farm.

Up to two dogs are welcome at both The Sugarhouse and at Amos Brown House.

Features

The Sugarhouse is set back from the road, its driveway bordered by stone walls. While it feels totally secluded, the house is just 10 minutes away from the shops, restaurants, brew pubs, and arts venues of Brattleboro, Vermont.

This one-story cabin includes one bedroom with a queen-size bed, one full bath, an open concept kitchen/dining room/living room with a gas log stove, and a screened porch. The kitchen is fully equipped, including a dishwasher.

From mid-June through October, visitors can make use of Rudyard Kipling’s original clay tennis court (the first tennis court built in Vermont), located half a mile away on the grounds of Kipling’s estate, Naulakha. In the winter, visitors enjoy on-site or nearby access to sledding, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. Those who are inclined to remain indoors in the colder months enjoy the radiant heat in The Sugarhouse’s floors, the gas log stove, and the books in the living room.

During a stay at The Sugarhouse, guests are invited to explore the rest of Scott Farm, a socially responsible business (Certified B Corporation) that is also a property of The Landmark Trust USA. During the fall, visitors can sample 130 varieties of ecologically grown heirloom apples, from Blue Pearmain (one of Thoreau’s favorites) to Esopus Spitzenburg (beloved by Thomas Jefferson). Pick your own apples or visit the Market to pick up a pie, a jar of freshly pressed cider, or Scott Farm’s apples, pears, plums, grapes, and quince. Located on the farm are stunning stone walls constructed by the expert builders at The Stone Trust, a nonprofit organization whose offices are at Scott Farm and whose mission is to preserve and advance the art and craft of dry stone walling. Scott Farm also has two public Chargepoint EV charging stations right at the farm so you can charge your vehicle at the most scenic charging station in Vermont.
