Jumping Into 2022
Dear Friends,
Hope your New Year is off to a happy and healthy start. The Landmark Trust USA and Scott Farm are leaping into the New Year as sponsors for the Harris Hill Ski Jump’s 100th Anniversary (Feb. 19-20, 2022). And it's not the first time the farm has supported this event—the shared history goes all the way back to 1924.
In December 1922, Brattleboro resident Fred Harris gathered a small group of volunteers and built a ski jump on Cedar Street in Brattleboro in time to host a state ski jumping championship. “Work on the jump is progressing so rapidly that the takeoff will be put in place this afternoon,” the Brattleboro Reformer reported on January 28, 1922, a week before the competition.
Two years later, Harris Hill ski jump hosted the National Championships. For this auspicious event, Scott Farm was the sponsor. This was printed on the back of the 1924 ticket:
Vermont Apples with the Flavor of the Hills
Sold in cartons designed for Parcel Post and Express shipments.
Packed 60, 36, and 12 apples to a carton. Season, September to May
Scott Farm, Brattleboro, Vermont
Harris Hill ski jump celebrates 100 years this year, and Scott Farm continues to thrive. The Farm is a sponsor of this year’s limited edition commemorative hand-strung tickets, in honor of the 1924 design.
Coming up this spring, from April 25-29, there's a unique opportunity to help restore the stone wall and pillars across from Dutton Farmhouse. The Landmark Trust USA is partnering with The Stone Trust to offer this hands-on workshop that teaches the traditional craft of dry stone walling. The workshop is open to anyone who has already completed an Introduction to Dry Stone Walling. You can learn more and sign up here.
Appreciatively,
