5 Questions with The Landmark Trust in Great Britain
This month, we’re pleased to introduce you to our friends at The Landmark Trust in Great Britain. Operating over 200 properties across England, Scotland, Wales, and Italy, The Landmark Trust pioneered the preservation stewardship model that we also follow. The Landmark Trust USA was actually established by The Landmark Trust before later becoming a distinct separate organization. Their beautifully preserved historic properties are ideal for your next international vacation and are definitely worth the trip!
The Landmark Trust’s Head of Marketing Alice Evans answered a few questions to help us get to know the good work the organization does and introduce their amazing properties.
Alice:
The Landmark Trust is one of Britain’s leading building conservation charities. With the help of our supporters, we save historic buildings in danger of being lost forever. We sensitively restore such ‘Landmarks’ and offer them a new future by making them available to everyone for self-catering holidays. The lettings income from the 200 extraordinary buildings in our care supports their maintenance and survival in our landscape, culture and society.
Founded in 1965, we are proud to share a history with the Landmark Trust USA - which has operated as a separate organisation since 1999 - and a common purpose with our friends at the Irish Landmark Trust.
Can you tell us a little about your organization?
The Landmark Trust is a British charity dedicated to saving precious yet at-risk historic buildings. Using traditional craft skills we sensitively transform remarkable sites – from castles to cottages, forts to follies - into self-catering holiday accommodation. The income we generate pays for future maintenance, while we fundraise to take on new rescue projects. Every year we welcome 70,000 holidaying guests and 20,000 people to open days, events and other engaging activities.
What kinds of properties do you have?
In our 60 years we have rescued more than 200 buildings, ranging from grand villas sleeping 16 to diminutive dwellings for just one or two people. In our care are properties spanning the breadth of British history, including buildings known to monarchs, writers, great architects and those in all walks of life. We have Landmarks across England, Scotland and Wales, plus two in the Channel Islands and seven in Italy; also in our care is the island of Lundy.
Who books your properties?
Everyone is welcome. Many of our properties are ideal destinations for multi-generational family holidays, catch ups with friends, couples retreats or solo travel. We have buildings in city centres and rural spots, near train stations or equipped with EV chargers. Over half our buildings welcome up to two dogs, and we’re delighted that 97% of our customers would recommend us to their friends.
Why do they book your properties?
Many Landmark guests come back year after year, sharing that things including the history of our buildings, the strength of our charitable mission or the high-quality consistency of every holiday experience are compelling. Some guests travel from across the world, some from just down the road, but everybody who books a holiday with us is helping heritage survive.
How can people book with you?
