When you are making vacation plans for southern Vermont, we hope you will stay with us in one of our historic Vermont vacation house rentals.

Spring came early this year when the temps hit 80 in March but we seem to be getting back to normal with cooler air giving spring blossoms more time to linger.  The daffodils are blooming at all of our Landmark Trust USA properties and lilac buds are starting to swell.  Wildflowers along the roads and in the woodlands are waking, bloodroot leaves are still furled tightly protecting juicy stems from cold snaps while blue skies encourage snow white flowers to open giving us a peek at bloodroot’s sunny yellow centers.

On Sunday we spotted trillium stretching up through leaf littered woods, the flower buds small but if we don’t check on them often, these spring ephemerals will blossom and vanish before we’ll have a chance to ohh and ahh.

At Scott Farm we are worried about the orchard.  Blossom has the potential to be three weeks ahead of schedule.  Our last frost date is historically May 31st, plenty of time for complete disaster.  Please keep your fingers crossed for us as a fall without our heirloom apples (and quince, medlars, nectarines, peaches, pears, and apricots) would be very sad indeed.

Most of you probably don’t know we have been without high speed internet at Landmark Trust USA and Scott Farm.

This morning,  after many, many long months of waiting (years?), we saw a Fair Point truck heading down Kipling Road loaded down with brand new telephone poles.  We never thought we would be excited watching a utility pole being put in place but we were and we are going to be even more excited when CVPS transfers the electric lines to the new poles and Comcast arrives to install high speed cable.

Our southern Vermont vacation properties may have been built in the 18th and 19th century and brought back to life in the 20th but we are thrilled to know that sometime in the very near future, our office will be part of the 21st century!

An Evening at Naulakha with Mr. Rudyard Kipling

A benefit performance for the Just So Stories program

Wednesday, March 21 at 7 p.m.

Adults wondering how the elephant got his trunk or the camel got his hump should come to Rudyard Kipling’s Naulakha on Wednesday, March 21st at 7:00 pm.  On that night, The Landmark Trust USA will be presenting Jackson Gillman in a benefit performance of Kipling’s enchanting children’s tales, the Just So Stories.  Mr. Gillman has delighted audiences of all ages with his lively characterizations and intimate theatrical style and should be familiar to many from the New England Performers’ Retreat vaudeville show.

Over the past 11 years, thousands of area grade schoolers and their teachers have watched as Mr. Gillman brought to life these timeless tales in the very setting where they were first told by Kipling to his daughter, Josephine.  Landmark Trust USA will again be offering this educational program free of charge to school groups during the week of March 19th.  So enthusiastic has been the reception for these stories that Landmark has decided that adults, too, should have the opportunity.

The evening performance will be limited to 25 and the admission charge of $35.00 will include fine desserts, coffee and an intimate tour of Naulakha.  Funds raised from this event will be used to support our school program, which is free for students of all ages.  For information and to reserve tickets please call (802) 254-6868 or email Info@landmarktrustusa.org.

Dinner was served buffet style, a choice of pinwheels of Vermont pastured pork stuffed with kale and Chef Tolenos’s Dolgo chutney; chicken with Lady apples and Normandy-style cider cream sauce; a surprise rabbit dish that vanished before staff had a chance to sample; and Scott Farm Delicata squash filled with caramelized Calville Blanc d’Hiver apples.

Dessert was made by The Strudel Queen, Vera Eisenburg.  She created a sublime strudel with the farm’s authentic strudel apple, Belle de Boskoop.

Everyone left full, happy and content.  Our volunteer staff is glad to have a year to recuperate so they can get in gear to do it again next year.   A big thank you to all of our guests for attending and applause and thanks to Chef Toleno, Chef Thompson, and all of our volunteer serving and clean-up staff!!!!!

We hope to raise $20,000 for our 5th Landmark, The Milk House at Scott Farm’s 1862 Barn and we are happy to report our first donation of $20 for our 20th!  A young college couple made the donation.   They are renting an apartment at Scott Farm (their third year) and they have announced they want to have their wedding at Scott Farm too!  We are thrilled they have taken interest in Landmark’s next project and wonder if they will be our first guests to honeymoon at the cozy Milk House bungalow.

Steve Lloyd, AIA, designed The Milk House to be as tight and tidy as a ship with sleeping space up to two complete with full bath and kitchen.  You will be able to walk the grounds and watch the sun set by the farm’s spring fed ponds.

Our new partner, The Stone Trust, will find The Milk House a useful overnight space for out-of-towners working towards stone wall certification.  If a larger space is in order, workshop participants will be just as happy renting one of Landmark Trust USA’s other historic vacation rentals in southern Vermont.

We hope to create Landmark #5 to celebrate our 20th year, The Milkhouse at Scott Farm’s 1862 Barn.   But we need your help … read on!

Our first project was Naulakha……a long-abandoned historic landmark.

We’ve come a long way since we set about the restoration of Rudyard Kipling’s house in 1992, and you only have to look about you to see what has been accomplished. Not only do we have four splendid Landmarks, but the success of the Scott Farm, our orchard enterprise, brings crowds of samplers and buyers to Kipling Road in the late summer and fall.

2012 marks our 20^th Anniversary.

Here’s what you and many others have made happen:

• Complete restoration, furnishing, and operation of:

Naulakha (Jewel Beyond Price)

The Sugar House

The Dutton Farmhouse

  The Amos Brown House

• Revitalization of the Scott Farm and its orchards

ongoing restoration of the buildings and the spectacular success of its

   90 varieties of heirloom apples

• The Just So Stories, now in their eleventh year, 

told to enthralled audiences of area schoolchildren, beside the desk where

Kipling wrote in the home that he built

•  Installation of alternative energy systems

high efficiency wood-burning furnaces, solar hot water and photovoltaic arrays

to demonstrate how green technology can reduce our heating costs and our

environmental impact

• Restoration of the historic Apple Packing Barn 

as a venue for agricultural events, weddings and conferences

It’s amazing, and it shows dedication, enthusiasm, and that the generous donations we have

received over the years from you, our loyal supporters, have been well spent.  We couldn’t have done it without you.  But the work continues. The opportunities grow. You have been generous. No matter how large or small, your gift makes a difference, creating a legacy in which we all share.

Our 20th Anniversary Fund  will raise $20,000 towards Landmark #5, The Milkhouse at Scott Farm’s 1862 Barn.

Next year is our 20th anniversary and we have plans to celebrate by fundraising for a new Landmark, The Milk House, located at Scott Farm in Dummerston, VT.   We are seeking donations and funding for this tight as a ship space.  You can help make this new project come true by making a donation thru our secure donate page on our website.

One of Landmark Trust USA’s many  missions is to make our properties    sustainable.  This fall we installed a large  solar array at Scott Farm in order to offset  100% of our electrical use.  We utilized real  horse power to clear away a small copse of  Norway spruce in the middle of our otherwise  sunny sheep meadow.  The system is now  complete and producing electricity.  The  nature of our installation will allow sheep to  continue to use the meadow.

We are pleased to announce that we have a new partner, The Stone Trust.  Jared Flynn and his board of directors have done a knock out job putting together a dry stone walling school, complete with certification, check them out.  The school is using the lower level of the 1862 Barn at Landmark Trust USA’s Scott Farm.  If you sign-up for a Stone Trust workshop, we hope you will come stay with us at one of our southern Vermont vacation rentals.

A wren built a wild twig nest in the newspaper box at the bottom of the driveway while a gorgeous fox hunted for voles in the meadow.

A pileated woodpecker has been hanging around as has a red-tail hawk. We are keeping our fingers crossed for the return of a barred owl who has kept watch over Naulakha and the Carriage House for the past two winters.

Moose have been spotted again at the beautiful Vermont historic farmhouse rental, Amos Brown House of 1802. If you haven’t been there and need splendid peace and quiet, this is the place to go. We’ve made quite a list of activities you can partake in depending of what time of year you rent this wonderful historic vacation rental in Whitingham, Vermont.

The Scott Farm orchard has been host to an absolutely fearless porcupine who was hard pressed to budge from a nap under the apple trees. A woodchuck made the orchard her home this past spring and we would often see her and her little ones making a wild dash through the fence to the safety of a hedgerow. Coyotes and fox have left their tracks on the farm road and soon we expect to see deer. Cedar waxwings have been noted in the orchard and just the other day the robins arrived for their annual gorging on fermenting apple drops, quite a sight to see their wobbly prints in the snow.

Mother Nature is quite a woman dropping snow on us before we were ready for winter. All we can say is it sure makes for a pretty scene in the Scott Farm orchard!
